New Highly Efficient Scuderi Split Cycle Air Hybrid Engine - Motorsport Engineer The Scuderi Group in West Springfield, Massachusetts, has recently developed the "Scuderi Split Cycle Air Hybrid Engine" (catchy I know). It is effectively a split-cycle internal combustion engine, but its revolutionary design has modified the common Otto cycle and instead of being only 33% efficient as most engines are, this new system is (in testing) claiming to reach efficiency levels of 40% far and above any other internal combustion engine, and best of all at this level up-to 80% of the toxic and atmosphere damaging gases are not present.

The Scuderi Group says it has received over $20 million in additional private funding for the continued development of its internal combustion engine, bringing the total amount of funds raised to date to over $35 million.

Scuderi Group Position Statement on Likely State Emissions Regulations Waiver

President Barack Obama is expected to grant a waiver allowing California and some other states to enforce their own greenhouse-gas emission standards on autos. According to the LA Times, this move would obligate automakers to produce cars that are far more efficient than those called for under current federal standards. The Scuderi Group recognizes that automotive manufacturers are under tremendous pressure due to the current global economic crisis and sharply lower sales of vehicles. With more stringent fuel emissions regulations now likely, the industry will face even greater challenges in the months and years ahead. Now more than ever, the Scuderi Group believes that auto manufacturers must embrace technological solutions that are cost-effective and practical, yet offer significant improvements in terms of both greater engine efficiency and lower emissions. The Scuderi Group offers the Scuderi Engine as a practical alternative to electric hybrids, hydrogen-powered engines and other existing and nascent engine technologies. The Scuderi Engine incorporates a unique split-cycle piston design that promises both efficiency gains and reduced emissions. No costly batteries or electric systems are required. Equally important from the automotive industry’s bottom line perspective, minimal retooling will be necessary to manufacture the Scuderi Engine. A prototype of the Scuderi Engine has already been assembled. The working prototype will be unveiled at the Society for Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit this April. We strongly believe that our timing couldn’t be better – for the health of the planet and for the global automotive industry at large.

The Scuderi Group Announces $20 Million in Additional Funding

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. USA – Jan. 19, 2009 – The Scuderi Group, developers of what is expected to be the world’s most fuel efficient internal combustion engine, announced today that it has received over $20 million in additional private funding. This brings the total amount of funds raised to date to over $35 million. The Scuderi Engine is an entirely new internal combustion process that could be the most significant improvement in engine efficiency in over 130 years. It is a split-cycle design that divides the four strokes of a standard engine over a paired combination of one (intake/compression) cylinder and one (power/exhaust) cylinder. The two cylinders are connected by a cross-over chamber with high-speed valves that allow each piston and cylinder to perform their respective functions independently. And by firing after top-dead center, it produces highly efficient and clean-burning combustion with one cylinder and compressed air with the other. These two cylinders perform their respective functions once per crankshaft revolution. Besides the efficiency gains and reduced emissions, early testing shows the Scuderi Engine having considerably more torque and power than conventional gasoline and diesel engines on the road today. “This latest infusion of investment allows us to continue developing the Scuderi Engine concept as well as accelerate our efforts to communicate the engine’s science and value to OEMs around the world,” said Sal Scuderi, president of the Scuderi Group. “We’ve only just begun to see what this technology can do and this round of funding will help us push our innovation even further.” A working model of the engine’s first prototype is scheduled to be unveiled to the automotive industry in April at the SAE World Congress in Detroit.

Merkel: German Cars Need to 'Go Green' to Compete

BERLIN (AFP) — Germany's renowned car industry must start producing cleaner, more innovative models if it hopes to remain competitive, Chancellor Angela Merkel said in an interview published Sunday. Merkel told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that the sector that invented the world's first automobile more than a century ago must remain on the cutting edge by developing "green" models. She said her government was willing to help by financing research that could be used in the development of more innovative cars and trucks but offered no details. "Now Germany is in a new kind of competition to see whether its industry can produce the model of the 21st century," Merkel said. She said there would be fresh help for the ailing automobile industry in a new 50-billion-euro (67-billion-dollar) stimulus package to be finalised this week, possibly in the form of car tax relief pegged to lower greenhouse gas emissions. By Kate Galbraith, The New York Times, January 8, 2009 Edward J. Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat known as an advocate of higher fuel-efficiency standards in automobiles, is set to become the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment, according to a report in the Boston Globe. The elevation is good news for environmentalists. My colleague John Broder has described Mr. Markey as "a frustrated advocate for automobile fuel efficiency and energy conservation legislation in his 15 terms in Congress." Scuderi Group Position on CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) Standards

The Bush administration has elected not to issue final rules for CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards for the 2011 – 2015 automotive model years as previously planned. A written statement issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation said that “recent financial difficulties of the automobile industry will require the next administration to conduct a thorough review of matters affecting the industry, including how to effectively implement" a new energy law requiring tougher standards. The Scuderi Group – developers of what is expected to be the most fuel efficient internal combustion engine – welcomes this development. The incoming Obama administration has consistently expressed firm commitments to both responsible environmental initiatives and to a vigorous domestic automotive industry. The Scuderi Group believes that with the implementation of innovative new technologies like the Scuderi Engine, each of these ambitious and vitally important objectives will reinforce the other. The first prototype of the Scuderi Engine is scheduled to be officially unveiled in April of 2009.
