Bush reviews more fuel-efficient vehicles with fleet operators

WASHINGTON -- Another day in the nation's capital, another chance for President Bush to look over some advanced vehicles. Bush reviewed a group of advanced technology commercial vehicles at an event at a U.S. Postal facility here -- one day after meeting with the CEOs of General Motors, Ford and DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group at the White House. Bush talked about the need for additional government funding of research with the CEOs and alluded to that today, suggesting the White House may be more open to upping research funding for automakers, especially on advanced batteries. Even Bush seemed talked-out on the subject -- he spoke for less than three minutes today. "The goal I laid out of reducing gasoline by 20 percent over 10 years is a realistic goal," Bush said. "In other words, this isn't a pipe dream, this is something that our nation can accomplish. It's going to take more research dollars, it's going to take working with the private sector, and it's going to take innovative leadership." House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi filed a mammoth clean energy bill yesterday that would provide loans and grants to municipalities to pursue renewable energy and provide a $2,000 credit for purchasers of hybrid vehicles. State House News The 364-page Green Communities Act would also expedite permitting for the siting of clean energy facilities, provide a $300 credit for businesses to offset the purchase of solar water heaters, and require state government to take steps to cut down on electricity use and set guidelines for energy-conscious state construction projects. DiMasi, touting his bill as the first of its kind in the country, said that only a $1.4 million appropriation would be necessary to finance the tax credit portions of the bill and that overall the bill "is going to save an awful lot of money." Greater Boston has been ranked fifth on a list of the cities that will be most likely to be host to a "cleantech economic revolution," according to SustainLane Government, a sustainability knowledge base for state and local government. The term cleantech refers to venture capital-funded technology startups in everything from biofuels to solar energy. San Francisco-based SustainLane focused on cities with the most promising cleantech incubation clusters, which are seen as a driving force of economic growth. U.S. automakers pledge to cooperate on climate

By the Associated Press, 3/15/2007 WASHINGTON - U.S. automakers and a top union official have pledged to work with Congress to find new ways of dealing with global warming, but declared that their industry could not bear the burden alone. The leaders of General Motors, Ford, Toyota and Chrysler, along with the head of the United Auto Workers union, made a rare joint appearance before a House subcommittee Wednesday. They stressed that proposed increases in gas mileage standards for new vehicles would be extremely expensive and could have calamitous results. "This could include the closing of additional facilities and the loss of tens of thousand of automotive jobs," Ron Gettelfinger, president of the union, said. But all of the industry leaders, under questioning from the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, John Dingell, Democrat of Michigan, vowed to work with the committee to produce regulations to address climate change and consider "new regulatory regimes" beyond the fuel economy program. EU Leaders Agree to Cut Greenhouse Gases

EU leaders agreed Friday on a bold set of measures to fight global warming, pledging that a fifth of the bloc's energy will come from green power sources such as wind turbines and solar panels by 2020 and 10 percent of European cars will run on biofuels. At French insistence, the deal - which does not yet include an enforcement mechanism - noted the role atomic energy could play in replacing coal- or oil-fired power plants blamed for pumping out greenhouse gases. The inclusion caused unease for non-nuclear states such as Austria and Ireland and triggered complaints from environmental groups. European leaders said the agreement, the first to go beyond the 35-nation Kyoto Protocol in its targets for greenhouse gas emissions cuts, marked a turning point in the fight against global warming. German Chancellor Angela Merkel challenged other nations to follow suit, saying the world still had time to "avoid what could well be a human calamity" caused by climate change. Scuderi Group introduces first hybrid power generator

Posted on 7 March 2007 | 0 Comments

The Scuderi Group today announced the first ever hybrid power generator technology that it will begin licensing for generator applications ranging from backyard power backups to more industrial power-plant environments. Recent studies show that its break-through air-hybrid internal combustion engine technology can provide significantly increased efficiently levels while dramatically decreasing the level of toxic emissions. Sophisticated computer modeling at a world renowned independent research and testing laboratory, previously done on mobile applications, revealed that in relatively constant load and speed applications - such as a generator - using the Scuderi Split-Cycle Engine Technology in a generator application could dramatically increase efficiency and decrease emissions. Further, a Scuderi Air-Hybrid Generator would have the additional capability of recapturing energy normally lost through waste heat, increasing efficiency by up to 25 to 50 percent and decreasing toxic emissions by up to 80 percent. Read more on forbes.com. In the following podcast, Scuderi Group vice-president Steven Scuderi discusses the application of the Scuderi technology in power generators, and how it differs from mobile applications:

Survey Finds 31 Percent of Households in State Tied to Auto Industry, 84 Percent Say Auto Industry is in "Major Trouble" Today; Autoworker, Other Views Track With Rest of U.S. Michigan residents are not cutting Detroit any slack when it comes to increasing fuel efficiency and decreasing global warming pollution. More than two thirds of Michigan autoworker households (67 percent) and a slightly higher level of all households in the state (72 percent) say that Washington could "help U.S. automakers be more competitive by increasing the federal fuel-efficiency standard to 40 miles per gallon," according to a new Civil Society Institute (CSI)/40MPG.org national opinion poll conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (ORC). More than four out of five Michigan residents (84 percent) agree that "the U.S. auto industry is in major trouble and Michigan's economy will suffer seriously if the situation of the Big Three automakers gets even worse." Those in Michigan households linked a "great deal/somewhat" to the health of the auto industry are even more likely (89 percent) to see the industry as being in serious trouble today. A slim 11 percent of all state residents think that "despite current problems in the U.S. auto industry, Michigan's economy is unlikely to suffer very much since the Big Three automakers have a good plan for moving ahead." Sal Scuderi speaking at the Basketball Hall of Fame The Scuderi Group gathered once again on center court at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. Held for the second time since last June, the meeting on February 27 provided members with a full update on the development of the Scuderi Air-Hybrid Engine and the general direction of the Scuderi Group, LLC. Sal Scuderi, president of the Scuderi Group (at right), gave progress reports on the key areas of the business, including updates on the developments of the prototypes, licensee talks, technology advances, and financial points. He reviewed ongoing licensee negotiations in Europe, India, Asia, and the U.S. with automotive and non-automotive OEMs that have shown interest in the Scuderi engine technology. Sal also walked the crowd through the important technological components of the air-hybrid engine prototypes as well as presenting some of the new technology advances. Following the presentations, Sal led an informative Q&A session where audience members had the chance to ask specific questions and get further details. "With all the great progress we’ve been making – in all areas – it was exciting to finally report the enormous momentum we have gained," commented Sal. "We received great feedback and many thoughtful comments on what an active and busy year this is turning out to be." With a busy marketing and engineering schedule mapped out, the Scuderi Group will be exhibiting in April at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit and then moving on to Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany, where the recent advances of the air-hybrid engine will be presented to the European market. A number of announcements from the Scuderi Group will be released in the upcoming months. If you would like to receive our monthly email newsletter and stay abreast of the developments, click here.
